Demonstrating the global appeal of roots reggae, this new album from Chinese reggae artist Liu Rui (aka Stinging Ray) is a welcome display of the classic sound of reggae music. He has built up a name in reggae internationally, founding ‘China Man Yard Records’ (the first label dedicated to Reggae, Dancehall and Soca in China) along with his collaborators General Huge (France) and Zulu Bob (Antigua & Barbuda). Since 2018, he has pushed the label to the forefront in China, including taking the lead at the annual Chinese ‘Bob Marley Day’, supported by the Jamaican Embassy.
He works with some of reggae’s finest on this new album, including Sly Dunbar and Flabba Holt. His first single ‘Jailhouse Skankin’ (including the Roots Radics no less) features on this album, along with its follow-up ‘No Remedy.’ Other tracks on this 12-track release include the intriguingly titled new single ‘Under the Red Wall’ and a final dub track which is an excellent conclusion to the album.
Great to hear this. While politicians argue across the world about power and territory, it’s good to hear reggae music crossing boundaries.
