Sugar Minott and Irie Ites: Watch Dem

Here’s a welcome release from the late reggae and dancehall master Sugar Minott who passed away in 2010, together with an excellent rhythm input from the Irie Ites. Sugar Minott released scores of albums on the Black Root, VP and Jammy’s labels and was a highly respected reggae artist. He was probably best known in the UK for his hit single ‘Good Thing Going’ in 1981 with its distinctive percussion sound and feelgood rhythm. This new release is very much in the dancehall tradition of the 1980s which he did so much to develop, and this can be heard even more clearly in the accompanying dub version entitled Watch Dub where the electronic beats, repeat and echo take us back in time – and happily so.
